This one is back to basics. Fret-saw,
Stanley knife and a very cheap set of small chisels. This
piece is based on the indigenous carving styles of New Zealand,
and is a representation of the taurapa (stern post) of a
waka taua, (carved canoe).
The piece is only one sided, it really
should be a complete all round carving; the small eye inset
is Paua.

Paua shellfish is a species of abalone (Haliotis
Iris) much used for jewellery and inlay work. The timber
is a piece of Red Beech
rescued from a fire-wood pile.
Finish is varnish.
